Welcome to the TransActions research group at the Education Faculty, University of Oslo. Formed in 2006, we bring together interdisciplinary research expertise across different parts of the faculty. The group has media, learning and identity in formal and informal settings as its core interest.
We're using a wiki to build and mediate a shared research space. Making connections between material in the site is central. We do this by profiling entries in the window to the right. These are gathered from across the site by way of each entry having a label (see header Labels under the logo).
This space contains material drawn from across the Transactions website. Blogs appear on each project page and well as for each of the members. A selection of material from these blogs is served up to the 'Home' screen.
The International conference 'Multimodality and Learning: New Perspectives on Knowledge, Representation and Communication' is to be held at Centre for Multimodal Research 19-20 June 2008.
Venue: Franklin Wilkins Building, Stamford Street, Waterloo, London.
dvoted _young Nordic Filmakers
In more than one year the Nordic filminstitutes have collaborated in the making of a new site for young filmmakers in the Nordic countries. dvoted is more than just another site showing unedited filmclips or trailers and clips from famous TV-shows. dvoted is a site for young people who are serious about their filmmaking.
Since September 2007 I have been working on a report on the activity and the users opinion about the site in the first year. The number of people who has a log in report has increased from 600 to 5400 in 14 months.
In January dvoted was nominated for Nöjesguiden's Stockholm Award in the Film category! The competition was no less than Johan Kling (Darling) and Roy Andersson (En kärlekshistoria, Sånger från andra våningen, Du levande). Sadly, too hard competition of course.
In the end of January Current TV tries to recruite freelance videographer on Island for the US based new TV-channel. Current TV is a news and culture cable channel aimed at 18-34 year olds, offering short-form non-fiction films on a wide range of subjects. The network is available in over 50 million homes in the US and the UK. A third of the network's content is created by independent, freelance and emerging filmmakers from around the world.
Please feel free to ask me about a summary on the dvoted report, if you are interested. It is available in an English and a Norwegian version. Unable to render embedded object: File (dvoted) not found.
Or just check out the site on: www.dvoted.net. You need an account to get into the real good stuff!!
Øystein
In November 2007 Ola Erstad and Øystein Gilje published, together with ph d student Thomas de Lange at Intermedia the report Morgendagens medieprodusenter (mediaproducers in the future).
The report present findings from a Norwegian survey on students in 'Media and communication studies' at Upper Secondary level (age 18-19).
In the survey we highlight how the students produce film and web-sites in and outside school, and relate these production practices to issues concerning authoring and remixing and how the students use different kind of software in this process.
In terms of findings we see that teachers have a diverse practice when they introduce software to the students. We also found differences between those students who produce media only at school and those who produce media both at school and in the leisure time. These differences where significant related to gender, media-use in general and production and 'publishing' practices.
The project is also presented in two different articles in international Journals. In Digital kompetanse04/07 issues of remixing and the use of different kind of software in digital production is discussed extensively in the article: Mediefagets produksjonspraksiser - morgendagens kompetanse?
In another article, differences between two different groups of mediaproducers will be discussed. The article will be published in Nordicom review no. 02/08.
The confererence on multimodality and learning are to be organized in London on
19-20 June 2000. The conference is arranged by the Centre for Multimodal Research (CMR). This is a network of scholars at the Institute of Education, coming together to augment and undertake
research in multimodality across the IoE.
Designs for learning is a conference focusing on design and knowledge. I hope that many of us have the possibility to go to Stockholm these first days of March 2008. I have submitted a paper and I think both Håvard, Magnus, Ola E. and maybe Andrew will find many of the issues on the conference interesting.
The conference will be organized around presentations of theoretical perspectives, research methodologies and empirical findings. Additionally, workshops will be organized around specific areas of interest.

"New research from Northwestern University finds that college students' choice of social networking sites -- including Facebook, MySpace and Xanga -- is related to their race, ethnicity and parents' education.
The findings challenge discourse about the democratic nature of online interaction and fly in the face of conventional wisdom suggesting that all college students communicate via Facebook, the popular social networking site (SNS) launched in 2004 by a Harvard undergraduate.
"That race, ethnicity and the education level of one's parents can predict which social network sites a student selects suggests there's less intermingling of users from varying backgrounds on these sites than previously believed," says Eszter Hargittai, author of "Whose Space" Differences Among Users and Non-Users of Social Network Sites.""
Mimi Ito skrev nylig på bloggen sin: "...while we may know the general demographics and numbers of US teens who have decided to participate in an online site such as MySpace, we know little about why particular youth decide to opt in or out of participation, and what the variables are--personal, social, cultural--that factor into these decisions as part of an unfolding life history" og stiller her et sentralt spørsmål: "Why is it that some youth decide to participate in some online sites rather than others?"
