A key aim of WIKI-D is to explore ways in which multimodal mediation of research outcomes may be articulated within and across projects. These projects have been funded the large Norwegian Research Council programme KIM (Communication, Information , Media). This website is centred on these project and the closing conference for the KIM programme. In this way, a face-to-face conference event (with video) is linked to project-based mediation online. The title WIKI-D refers to an emergent, exploratory discoursethat also to highlight research outcomes internationally. For this reason the site is in English. Many of the links also refer to related Norwegian sites and information.
As mediation, a range of research outcomes in a diversity of projects on communication, information and media are presented. These categories include: books, chapters of books, conferences, journals, media coverage, artistic works, reviews, papers, seminars and theses. (see the Relational mode in this site to select and sort these categories).
WIKI-D refers to wiki-based discourse and 'wicked' discourse. The project takes up the notion of 'wicked' problems (floated by Rittel ). According to Wikipedia 'Wicked problems have incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements; and solutions to them are often difficult to recognize as such because of complex interdependencies. Rittel and Webber stated that while attempting to solve a wicked problem, the solution of one of its aspects may reveal or create other, even more complex problems.'
In an iterative digital design process, the WIKI-D site was built with reference to a similar mediation of research in a EU Culture 2000 funded project - GRIG - to which InterMedia the research host of the WIKI-D project is a member. The WIKI-D site coordinates and highlights semantic relations across outcomes and projects through tagging. This may be seen as an unfolding wicked problem of building an emergent electronic research rhetoric. Wikis allow relations to be built and thereby aspects of transdisciplinarity may be revealed. WIKI-D enables KIM project members and conference delegates to participate in shaping 'wiki-d discourse' before, during and after the conference. As a means of building and reflecting on the shaping of online research rhetoric, we have also developed an article entitled 'WIKI-D DISCOURSE: wikis and wicked problems in digital research rhetoric ' to be submitted to an online referred journal.
- The WIKI-D project partners are: Andrew Morrison (project leader), Synne Skjulstad, Idunn Sem, Live Roaldset, Jeremy Toussaint and Ole Smørdal (Communication Design Group at InterMedia & InterMediaLab).
- The project period runs from January-March 2008, coinciding with the Closing Conference for the KIM programme on 6 March 2008. Projects funded by KIM will be able to add to the site subsequent to the conference.
- WIKI-D's outcomes are: the WIKI-D project website, presentation and use of the site at KIM conference; a related multimodal performance by Prof Marsha McLuhan at the conference; and a research paper for online journal.
- Related projects at InterMedia include: GRIG , Transactions , Designing Design , MULTIMO . |
