Objectives: 1) Relate it to Ole's ongoing work (using Xwiki) 2) OUR TASK/SETTING: How can a wiki support a workshop like this? PROBLEMS WITH WIKI, IN GENERAL: 1. Summarization 2. Realtime collocated collaboration 3. Organizing site structure and navigation 4. Rules are unclear 5. How to embrace freedom/ake responsibility 6. Agency & autonomy 7. Integrate with other tools (email, IM, etc.) --How to capture data for research FUNCTIONALITIES OF WIKI, FOR CSCL 2007 WORKSHOP ATTENDEES: -Summarize group brainstorming and ideas is key. How do we do this? What do we choose to post. -HOW do you get each individual's voice into the summary? How do individual ideas morph the group summary artifact? How does versioning come into play? Does each individual create their own summary page? -In a wiki, is a summary just a shared object? -Do you edit the same page, or create a new page for each individual's edits? --- Mediation and affordances. Tags. Split up. --- Create shared understanding. --- Advance our knowledge on collaborative level, but then bring own theoretical work to table, apply it to our own theoretical work. --- What is the shared artifact of several disparate researchers from different perspectives? -Keep participants in touch with each other after the workshop? -Articles, readings -How do we summarize the results of 5 disparate group projects? -Joint publishing -Working paper, proceedings -Networking: The value is the FTF. Is this a community of practice? -If so, can the group take the agency to decide this, and subsequently use the wiki to bolster the community of practice? -Knowledge advancement: Gerry: People used to write books. One book advances ideas of subsequent books. Book is organized on a proposed thesis, arguments, idea develops over time. Concept of mind developed for years. Can a wiki be a medium for knowledge advancement? What are some current problems with wiki technology? 1. Ability to summarize 2. Ratings of different tasks and projects, wiki pages Grading based on participation: extrinsically motivated vs. intrinsically? How can you make your wiki site usable for others outside of the core group? Agency, autonomy Rating systems to motivate, Social process Producing summaries Integrated website Publishing final project Infrastructure: integrate wikis Chat, shared whiteboard, wiki
