MA OperaTwo-year course (120 credits) The master’s programme in opera is intended to train opera singers to the highest artistic level. Basic training in acting and some experience of stage work are required. This forms the basis for the later work, the aim of which is to master and communicate bigger roles – during the course at least two roles must be learned in full. The course comprises individual singing, learning music and ensemble singing, movement and plastics, learning roles, dance, opera history and dramaturgy. All the subjects studied come together in the stage productions, and these productions are therefore central to the course. The productions will cover important style epochs and a breadth of musical, singing and stage styles. Choice of repertoire is tailored to the students and the individual’s abilities and requirements. The productions are led by a team with the key members being the director, musical director and répétiteur. Admission Applicants are required to have completed at least two years of a college course in music plus one year of opera studies, or at least three years of a college course in music comprising a minimum of 80 credits relating to singing and practical subjects, plus 25 credits for staging and musical-drama subjects. Admission is by means of entrance examinations and interview. The examinations are usually held in March. Students from the
one-year course in opera at KhiO proceed directly to the final examination for admission to the master’s programme.Other applicants
must first qualify for the examinations by getting through the introductory rounds. All suitably qualified applicants compete
on equal terms for a place on the master’s programme.
