Course catalogue autumn 2007 (pdf)

Two-year course (120 credits)

Completion of this course leads to the degree of Master of Fine Art.

The master’s programme in fine art trains artists to be independent, active contributors to contemporary art and related social areas. The course equips students to work as artists at international level, and for other work in society requiring aesthetic skills and innovation.

The master’s course aims to extend the student’s field of experience and provide a deeper understanding of theoretical subjects.

The student’s own artistic work and a theoretical project linked to this form the core of the course. The course offers advanced studies in art theory, painting, photography, sculpture/installation/performance and digital art, focusing on one or a combination of these, plus theoretical subjects at advanced level. Emphasis is placed on a cross-disciplinary orientation and active collaboration with other institutions, both nationally and internationally. The course combines self-study, theoretical instruction, practical work and research.

The master’s course in fine art comprises three main elements:

  • Theoretical subjects and seminars
  • Practical work
  • A theoretical project, the master’s thesis, related to the student’s practical work.

The theoretical subjects are developed in the course of the practical work and work on the thesis. Students are actively involved in shaping the course.

Practical work: The student must develop a coherent work of art which expresses independence and innovative creativity.

This subject area includes studio work, supervision, workshops, exhibitions, shows and presentations. Students are expected to place their work in an international context by actively seeking out the international artistic environment and working to develop their own networks.

The subject chosen for the thesis may be linked to the student’s own practical work or may be a theoretical project of the student’s own choice. An outline of the thesis must be included with the application for the course. The thesis must demonstrate the student’s ability to apply theory and method to a project.
