THE JAPAN ANTHROPOLOGY WORKSHOP (JAWS)

18th Conference
University of Oslo
Museum of Cultural History
March 14-17, 2007

CALL FOR PAPERS

The organizing committee welcomes panel and paper proposals for the 2007 JAWS conference. The conference theme is "Japan and materiality in a broader perspective." A "broader perspective" may include any aspect of what is tangible or physical, but proposal topics are not limited to this. The organizers call for panel and individual paper proposals which lay out Japanese contexts within the general scope of anthropological portrayal. Participation is open to scholars and students from all over the world.

Panel proposals and presentation abstracts must be received no later than November 21, 2006. Please paste abstract into the registration form attached to this page. Otherwise, send it by email to: jaws-2007@khm.uio.no. The Organizing Committee invites prospective panel conveners to post calls for papers: a topic for a conference activity such as a plenum arrangement, panel / workshop presentation, roundtable discussion, or media event. Please forward the idea to jaws-2007@khm.uio.no. The left margin of this page is open for such postings individual calls for participation, in panels or other conference events. Accepted proposals will be accessible similarly. The RSS (syndication feeds) format is used for variable or incremental content. RSS feeds will be intercepted by web browsers (recent versions) or by a dedicated RSS browser.

Registration consists of two parts: (a) input of participant information and (b) input of payment information in a secure online payment form. A message of confirmation from the Oslo JAWS secretariat will provide the link for proceeding to step b. It will also deliver a conference hotel booking code.

Possible topics for the conference are listed below, yet paper proposals addressing issues falling outside this range of items are equally welcome.

  • Popular culture: media, film, fashion, commercial culture, food & drink
  • Place and landscape: monuments, sights, itineraries, mementos
  • The materiality of display: theme parks, museums, games, virtual reality
  • Significant objects: tools for identity making, proprietorship, emblems of power and interest
  • Inalienable or marketable crafts and skills
  • Nature, body, sexuality, and the sacred within the context of tools and technology
  • The physicality of selfhood: social use of the body
