Studieveileder/Information about studies

Jeg er studieveileder ved Linjen for fysikk og matematikk, fortrinnsvis for studieretningen for industriell matematikk.

EDUCATIONAL INTERESTS

Industrial mathematics programs

My educational interests are mainly connected to the Industrial Mathematics Program at NTNU. This program, which is part of the Physics and Mathematics Engineering education has been going on since 1982.  Studieretningen for industriell matematikk is a description of the program in Norwegian.

Currently about 40 students enroll in the program each year.

Mathematical modelling

The mathematical modelling course was introduced at the very beginning of the Industrial Mathematics program and has been following the program since then. A description of the course and some of its philosophy may be found on some of the Mathematical Modelling home pages (See the department page)

We are interested in exchanging course material, and in particular, learn about case studies that could be applied in the present course.

Fourier Analysis

The Fourier Analysis course is for graduate or final year undergraduate students and contains central topics ranging from the classical theory, theory of distributions, sampling theory, discrete Fourier transform and FFT. Also for this course educational examples and course material are of interest.

ECMI

The institute is a member of European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry. For more information please consult the ECMI Home Page.  The ECMI Modelling Week  in Trondheim 2-11 July 1999 was a great event!

RESEARCH INTERESTS

"The basic law of ocean waves is the apparent lack of any law" (Lord Rayleigh)

My main research interests for many years in the offshore consulting community has been ocean waves, mostly topics related to the analysis of directional ocean waves, wave measurements, wave statistics and climatology. Over the past years, the understanding of how a Synthetic Aperture Radar sees ocean waves has required a lot of effort. More details are available from the list of publication in the CV.

SOME RECENT TALKS

This section will be updated.

This is a PDF-version of the talk that was supposed to be given at ECMI 2000.

A Unified Approach to Extreme Value Analysis of Ocean Waves, ISOPE 2000, Seattle 2000 (with Stephen F. Barstow, OCEANOR ASA): ISOPE2000

Analysis of single point triplets. EGS2001, Nice: Triplet3.ppt

Measuring directional wave spectra with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (with NORTEK ASA), EGS2001, Nice: awac.ppt

Impact of higher order wave spectra on ocean wave measurements. Waves 2001, San Fransisco. waves2001.pdf

PROJECT/CONSULTING WORK

Over the years I have been involved in numerous consulting and R&D projects. The following list of acronyms is only for those interested: CADS, WADIC, PROMEC, JEEP, LEWEX, CUMEX, WAVEMOD, SCAWVEX, WACSIS, EUROWAVES (Some of the recent projects have their our Web-pages).

Recent external projects:

EnviWave (Development and Application of Validated Geophysical Ocean Wave Products from ENVISAT ASAR and RA-2 Instruments) Finished 2005

ExtrWave (Modeling of extreme ocean waves and ocean wave climate on mesoscale) Finished 2004

INTAS 666-1999 (Estimation of extreme metocean events, coordinator) Finished 2003
