High degree of Survivability
The New Frigate is a 133 metre long monohull antisubmarine frigate, with a displacement of 5291 t (Full Load, End of Life),a maximum transit speed of more than 26 knots, steel hull and
superstructure and a CODAG propulsion plant.
The electric system is redundant and zone distributed. The frigate is provided with medical facilities and an organic helicopter. Seakeeping
characteristics are optimised for operations in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea.
The design includes emphasis on ship automation, human factors, ship supportability, (life cycle
cost) and the use of commercial of the shelf equipment. These are considered as leading factors
in the design process.
The New Frigate is designed with high degree of survivability. Signature reduction measures
were applied to reduce Hydroacoustic noise levels, Thermal Infrared (TIR) signatures, Radar
Cross Section (RCS) and Magnetic and Electromagnetic signatures. Taking into account
the New Frigate’s primary task, antisubmarine warfare (ASW), priority has been on under water
signature control measures. During the preliminary design stages, special emphasis was placed
on defining a balanced design with respect to passive and active countermeasures as well as the
Frigate’s weapon system.
Reduced vulnerability is achieved reached with the Frigate’s zoning concept, a number of
specially reinforced main bulkheads, increased structural strength in order to achieve residual
strength after peace-and wartime damage, and an enhanced nuclear, biological and chemical
defense (NBCD) concept. The following priorities have been governing for the design:
- Stay afloat.
- Prevent damage from spreading.
- Maintain mobility.
- Maintain and restore self defence capabilities.
The New Frigates will comply with all relevant civilian rules and regulation with respect to health, environment and safety, with special emphasis on personnel-and material safety. The Royal Norwegian Navy oversees compliance.
