NBIM External Fixed Income Managers Group manages a portfolio consisting of 22 External Managers who manages 35 different mandates. Asset under Management is 24 billion US dollar as end of December 2006.

The group’s objective is to conduct active management and to take market exposure if and when needed for NBIM through allocations to active strategies within the fixed income and currency universe and seeks to achieve risk-adjusted returns from a wide variety of strategies. The group conducts investment activities within Macro, Fixed Income and Alternative strategies. Strategies
The most important strategies for external fixed income management are listed below. The list is not complete and is changed regularly as new strategies are developed.
- Global Macro/TAA: Global Macro managers seek to profit from long and short positions in any of the world’s major capital markets (fixed income, currency, equity, commodity)
- Currency
- Rates/RV Fixed Income: Global/Regional.
- Credit/Corporate: Global/Regional or Country
- Securitized/MBS: Global/Regional or Country
- Emerging markets
Mandate Structure
The majority of our mandates are managed account on a segregated basis but we may also sets up funds were that is appropriate or invest in already establish fund structures. The group run mandates from 0.5% to 12% in active/relative risk space of which most are benchmarked to some fixed income benchmark or versus cash benchmark (Libor).
All mandates are subject to be compliant with the Funds overall guidelines.
Manager/Mandate Searches
Manager/mandate searches is a continuously open ended process within the team. We review existing and prospect mandates at all times and try to be opportunistic in our management.
Currently we are looking to expand our exposure in:
- EMD (Long/Short)
- Corporate (US and Europe, L/S and Long only)
- Distressed
