The Department teaches architect students at Faculty of Architecture and Fine Art, and civil engineering students at Faculty of engineering and technology. Students also come from other faculties at our university NTNU, for instance from biological studies and geography, or are part time students taking courses while having a job elsewhere. The Department also offers a Master of Science program in "Urban Ecological Planning" to students from abroad, and a master program in physical planning.

The Department works with research and development projects, and educates researchers through a doctoral program (Dr. ing. program). It also offers shorter continuing education courses.

Our professional field is physical planning for a sustainable development. Activities span from a regional to a detailed scale, and are based on Norwegian planning laws and regulations. Our work also includes planning in developing countries. Urban design, urban renewal, municipal planning, landscape planning, development of planning methods, and use of information technology (GIS), are among our activities.
