Gas Storage Technology Laboratory

- At NTNU Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering

Contact: Einar Broch

The laboratory handles the following research related to storage of gases in rock caverns :

Rock stress measurements

Complete field and laboratory equipment for two- and three-dimensional measurement of stresses.  The equipment includes drilling rig for drilling of rock cores and for performance of overcoring and hydraulic jacking tests in the rock mass.  The latter test is of particular importance for evaluation of the critical stress field around caverns containing pressurised gas. Computer programs for evaluation of data obtained from the field and laboratory tests.

Advanced Numerical Analysis

We have lisence to and solid experience in using the most advanced computer programs like the ABAQUS, FLAC-3D, UDEC and DIANA for modelling of different types of gas storage caverns in rocks of different quality.

Mechanical and physical properties of rocks

Fully equipped laboratory for measurement of a wide variety of mechanical and physical properties of rocks and of gouge material from weakness zones in rock masses. The laboratory also performs mineralogical and petrographical analyses using up-to-date, advanced equipment

In-situ stress measurement for an oil/gas storage cavern project in Singapore

Thermal stress computation for a LPG storage cavern: Tensile horizontal stress in 3 years that may cause joint opening and gas leakage
