Mineral Technology Laboratory

- At NTNU Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering and SINTEF Materials and Applied Chemistry

Contact: Knut Sandvik or Juraj Chmelar

The Mineral Technology Laboratory consists of two pilot halls totalling 550 square meters, supported by a workshop and a number of specialised analytical laboratories.

In the context of CO2 sequestration on minerals reactions during comminution may speed up reaction rates considerably. Comminution equipment of the laboratory is of interest as well as the laboratory's equipment for particle characterisation.

The major pieces of equipment used for grinding are:

  • A pilot ball mill 690 mm diameter by 1000 mm, which actually can be remotely controlled via internet. It can work in a closed circuit with a pump and a screen. On line analysis of the grinding product is possible. Operating wet.
  • A number of other ball mills and autogenous mills
  • A jet mill with classifier
  • A Hicom nutating mill
  • A high pressure roller crusher

The mills can after some modifications be run in a CO2 atmosphere.

There are crushers available that may crush feed materials from about 150 mm.

For investigation of grinding results and product chemistry the following equipment is available:

  • Laser difraction particle size measurement
  • Sieving
  • Sedigraph
  • BET adsorption
  • Gas pycnometer
  • XRF and XRD
  • ICP - MS analysis

Auxiliary equipment

  • Pressurized air: 0.5 kg/s @ 6 bar
  • Cold water: 20 m3/h @ 6 bar
  • Dust removal
