Reservoir Technology Laboratory

Contact: Jon Kleppe

Planning and monitoring of CO2 injection projects is based on three corner stones:

  • Reservoir engineering: A key issue in CO2 injection in oil reservoirs is the interaction of CO2 with oil, which determines the improved oil recovery effect. Hydrocarbon Phase Behavior research is a speciality at NTNU. Prediction of CO2 movement in reservoirs is founded on understanding of reservoir rock properties, and by numerical modeling of fluid flow. NTNU has reservoir rock laboratories and reservoir simulation software that may be applied for this purpose.

  • Seismics: Monitoring of reservoirs under CO2 injection is crucial for improvement of oil recovery. Time-lapse seismics (4D) is therefore central. NTNU has expertise, facilities and interpretation software for such monitoring, and a research group that integrates reservoir engineering and seismics.

  • High performance computing and high performation visualization CO2 injection in oil reservoirs involves analysis of huge amounts of data (geological data, reservoir properties, seismic data), and numerical solution of PDE´s describing fluid flow as well as inverting large amounts of seismic data require the most powerful computers available. NTNU has a supercomputer centre consisting of SGI Origin 3800L with 1 Tflop of computing power which may be used for this purpose. In addition, NTNU has recently established a state-of-art visualization laboratory consisting of a RAVE unit from Fakespace, which may be used for visualization or reservoir geology, seismics, and fluid flow in reservoirs.
