One of the goals of NTNU is to contribute to national value creation on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and to the internationalization of the Norwegian petroleum industry. The Department of Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geophysics focuses on long-term technical and scientific R&D solutions. Efforts approach energy research as a whole, using environmental concerns as a guide and sustainability as long-term goal.
The research acitivities tied to integration, exploration, and production of oil and gas account for more than 50 PhD and postdoc researchers and 30 professors in one of the universities leading strategic research communities, and focus areas .
New areas of research, all aimed at better exploration and production of oil and gas, include:
VR - lab: High Performance Visualization and Computing
Huge amounts of data and demanding computational tasks are typical for many of the petroleum disciplines. Through a close collaboration with Norsk Hydro, the department has been able to install a floor-to-ceiling Virtual Reality laboratory, with a dedicated 32-processor SGI computer. The laboratory is used primarily for visualization of seismic data and reservoir fluid flow. Other applications are under development. We have close collaboration with other departments at NTNU, such as medicine and computer science.

Centre for Integrated Operations in the Petroleum Industry
This center works to develop a knowledge bank, methods, and tools for integrated operations for upstream petroleum activities, thereby supporting endeavors to further progress and revitalize the industry technologies and practice. The added value of adopting IO will be seen in additional commercial finds of oil and gas, increased recovery rates, reduced costs, longer life for petroleum fields, reduced environmental loads, and improved safety measures. The Center's Director and Chair is Professor Jon Kleppe. » Website for the Integrated Operations Centre
ROck SEismic (ROSE) Project
ROSE (ROck SEismic) is a strategic university project at the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Applied geophysics (IPT), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). It is sponsored mainly by the Research Council of Norway (NFR ). In addition, the following companies sponsor the project: BG, BP, Chevron, Conoco-Phillips, DNO, Exxon-Mobil, Hydro, Lundin Petroleum, Shell, Statoil, Total. We focus the research within the following areas: Rock physics, geomechanics, time lapse seismic, reservoir characterization, seismic imaging and seismic inversion.
