PK 8201 Reliability of Safety-Critical FunctionsSubject teachers: Professor Jørn Vatn and Professor Marvin Rausand Time: First lecture: 2006.01.17, 1415-1600, VG11 (Valgrinda) Type of coursePhD course - 7.5 credits. Learning objectiveIn this course the students will (i) get insight into different types of safety critical systems and safety demands for such systems, (ii) learn how the reliability of such systems can be assessed, and (iii) get insight into different topics related to such systems, e.g., common cause failures, human and organisational factors. Recommended previous knowledgeKnowledge corresponding to TPK4120 Safety and Reliability Engineering. ContentOverview of the IEC 61508 standard, and corresponding standards. The OLF 70 Guideline. Safety barriers. Risk acceptance criteria, risk analysis and allocation of safety requirements. Quantification of probability of failure on demand. Identification, defences against and quantification of common cause failures. Diagnostic and functional testing. Partial stroke testing, and non perfect testing. Human and organisational factors in relation to safety critical functions. Data analysis, and updating of calculations in the light of field experience. Education conceptOrdinary lectures, and presentation of student work. A semester report is mandatory, and will count 50% in the final marking. Course materialInternational standards, scientific reports, scientific articles, and selected chapters from textbooks.
