Subsea: Technical Safety and Reliability

Continuing education course lectured in English

The course gives an introduction to reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) engineering, and presents analytical and practical methods and tools that can be used to assess and improve RAMS characteristics of subsea production systems.

Time:

  • Part 1: 30 October- 3 November, 2006
  • Part 2: 20 - 24 November, 2006

Place: Sandvika, Bærum

Extent of course: 7.5 credits (in the NTNU/ECTS system)

Target group: Personnel involved in system design, engineering and/or consulting related to subsea production systems.

Qualifications required: The course is an introductory course and requires limited prior knowledge. The participants should, however, have studied at least 3 years at university level. Practical experience related to engineering and/or operation of subsea production systems may partly compensate for lack of formal education.

Course material: A special compendium (in English) has been prepared for the course.

Course contents

Examples and coursework will focus on subsea production systems, e.g., X-mas trees, control systems, and manifolds. The following topics will be covered:

  • Introduction to subsea production systems
  • Technical risk management
  • HAZOP/SAFOP to identify unacceptable consequences of deviations from the design intent
  • Failuire data
  • FMECA; Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis to identify and control critical failure modes
  • Analytical qualification of new technology, to ensure sufficient robustness towards critical failure modes
  • Fault tree analysis, to identify weaknesses like single failure sources, and assess and mitigate such
  • Reliability block diagrams, to identify weaknesses like single failure sources, and assess and mitigate such
  • Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of safety instrumented functions in relation to the OLF GL 070 and IEC 61508/ IEC 61511 standards, to ensure sufficient on demand reliability of safety instrumented systems
  • Production availability analysis (RAM), to estimate the production availability, and ensure optimal production availability and maximum net present value.
  • Barrier analysis, to evaluate the reliability of static and dynamic safety barriers

Coures presentation

  • Lectures
  • Coursework/exercises (carried out by groups of 3-4 students)
  • Presentation and discussion of data and information sources
  • Case studies
