TPK 4120 Safety and Reliability Analysis

Learning objectives

Main objective

During this course you will learn and understand the application of basic concepts and methods for reliability and risk assessment of technological systems. You will further learn how to carry out simple reliability and risk analyses of practical systems.

More specific objectives

After completing this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the basic concepts of safety and reliability, comprising:
    • Reliability
    • Safety and risk
    • Failures, faults, and errors
    • Failure rate and failure frequency
    • Survival probability
    • Mean time to failure and mean time between failures
    • Availability
  • Be familiar with, and be able to use life models like:
    • Exponential distribution
    • Weibull distribution
    • Lognormal distribution
  • Be familiar with, and be able to use reliability importance measures like:
    • Birnbaum's measure
    • Criticality Importance measure
    • Improvement potential
    • Fussell-Vesely's measure
  • Be familiar with, and be able to apply analytical methods like:
    • Preliminary hazard analysis
    • Failure modes, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA)
    • Reliability block diagrams (and structure functions)
    • Fault tree analysis
    • Event tree analysis
    • Hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP)
    • Markov analysis
  • Be able to quantify and assess the reliability of simple technological systems - with a special focus on safety-critical systems
