System Reliability Theory (Second Edition) Errata in First Printing

Errata for the 1st printings (as of December 2003)

The following are the known bugs from the first printings of "System Reliability Theory" (2nd edition). Page numbers in red indicate errors that might lead readers seriously astray; the rest are mainly typos. (Mathematical symbols, Greek letters, etc. are written in LaTeX format).

Front Material

• Several errors in Contents related to page changes. Example: Section 6.4 is missing when going from page viii to page ix. The font is not the same on even and odd pages.
• Page xiv, last line in paragraph "Use as a Textbook": Please change my email address to: marvin.rausand@ntnu.no (The supplied address is obsolete)

• Page 26: Fig 2.8 is not compatible with the text on bottom of the page. The figur is illustrating the probability density function when \lambda=0.4, and the corresponding distribution function (i.e., not the survivor function).

• Page 85, 14th line from bottom: Change Blache to Blanche

Chapter 4

• Page 149, equation (4.6): The first X should be bold, i.e., h( \bm{p} (t) ) = E( \phi( \bm{X} (t) ) ) =
• Page 154, equation (4.21): The first summation (= \sum_{1=1}^n ) should be a product (= \prod_{i=1}^n )
• Page 157, third last line: Add a bold X to give \phi( \bm{X}(t))
• Page 163, first equation: The first Y should be bold, i.e. \psi( \bm{Y}(t) ) =

• Page 185, equation 5.4): The last minus (-) should be a plus (+)

• Page 221, figure 6.8: Change (a), (b), (c) to (1), (2), (3)
• Page 228, Problem 6.4: "the bridge structure in Example 4.8" should be "the bridge structure in Example 4.13"

• Page 304. In the first line after equation (8.3): "the matrix P" should be "the matrix P(t)"
• Page 329, middle of the page: "Since all the elements of the first column" should be "Since all the elements of the first row"
• Page 330, first formula: The first equality sign (=) should be a multiplication sign (*).
• Page 332, first line after Example 8.7: MTTF should be MTTF_S
• Page 333, para. 8: MTTF should be MTTF_S (twice)
• Page 355, denominator of second displayed equation: "pi" should be the Greek letter \pi.

Chapter 9

• Page 386, middle of the page: ... with shape parameter \alpha > 1 and scale parameter \lambda. (i.e., change "shape" to "scale")

Chapter 10

• Page 450, item 3 line 3: "...plan (platform) level ..." -> "... plant (platform) level ..."
• Page 453, line 2 after formula (10.34): Change to: "probability that the safety system is not able to shut down ..."
• Page 454, line 2 after Example 10.15:Greek letter \rho should be bold.

Chapter 11

• Page 470: Replace x with t in equations (11.3) and (11.4)
• Page 502: Replace \tilde{\lambda} with \hat{\lambda} in equation (11.64)
• Page 504, second line in Example 11.13: Add "failures" to give: "We have observed x=3 failures during ..."
