Bachelor's Degree Programme

Chemistry

– About the degree programme

Chemistry for a better society and environment
Chemical principles apply everywhere. Medical innovations, knowledge about the environment, the oil industry and the production of practically everything we use daily are examples of areas where knowledge of chemistry is decisive.

Knowledge about chemistry has been crucial to much progress and to the prosperity we experience today. However, at the same time as chemical progress has made our workday easier, it has also caused pollution and other environmental problems. Without knowledge about chemistry we will be unable to solve these problems and create a more sustainable development.

Thus, our knowledge can be used both to obtain positive results and to understand and minimize negative effects, involving fascinating challenges for you as a chemist.

Knowledge of chemistry is necessary
In very many professions, chemistry is used daily. Knowledge of chemistry is necessary for the production of food and drinks. Our drinking water is safe because chemical analyses are conducted regularly and the water is treaded with chemicals. Laboratory technicians use chemistry when analyzing blood samples. Drugs, colouring, plastic, and new materials are produced chemically from natural raw materials. Chemical analyses are becoming increasingly more important in criminal cases, and farming and aquaculture knowledge of chemistry is the foundation for increased crop production and the prevention of plant and animal diseases. One of the world’s largest industries today is petrochemistry where crude oil is converted into useful products.

By studying chemistry, you will gain insight into something that affects you and today’s society, and you get the chance of having an exciting job. Chemists are found in very many different jobs - in industry, research, public administration, and education. Accept the challenge and help us create a better future!

Bachelor’s Degree
In the Bachelor’s programme in Chemistry you may choose between four different subject combinations. The first three semesters of the degree programme are identical for all chemistry students. In addition, the first semester is jointly with the degree programmes in Biology and Biotechnology.

In the fourth semester one of four subject combinations is chosen:

Each of these four subject combinations qualifies for admission to the corresponding Master's programmes. All four combinations also qualify for admission to the field of study called Chemistry Didactics (chemistry dissemination).

The subject combinations Natural Environment Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry also qualify for the interdisciplinary Master’s programmes Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and Natural Resources Management.
