Ethiopia Research Programme

Northern Ethiopia is the most famine-exposed area of the world. Famine is a part of the history of this area, but the occurrence and scale of famine may be increasing. The Ethiopia Research Programme (ERP) deals with the peasant economy of the northern highlands, with a particular focus on poverty, as well as the potential for development within the local economy. ERP was launched in 1986 and has included a series of projects. The particular disciplinary, thematic and regional emphasis has varied depending on the specific projects.

Currently (2001-2004) the main activity is the project "Rethinking Famine: New Perspectives on Peasant Livelihoods" (REFAM), funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The emphasis is on the famine-exposed areas of North Wälo, with comparative material from South Wälo and North Shäwa.
