Aim and Content
The governing equations will be examined and scaled for synoptic motions in the mid-latitudes. The result constitutes the basis for quasi-geostrophic theory. This theory will be derived and applied to study waves and synoptic structures such as low-pressures, high pressures and jets. Concerning waves, the emphasis in this course will be put on stability and propagation of Rossby waves and baroclinic waves. This course also offers a short introduction to the effect of large-scale topography and the atmospheric energy budget on middle latitudes.
Learning Outcomes
After completing GEOF326 the student will be able to:
- Define and characterize synoptic phenomena from observed atmospheric motions
- Use mathematical methods to analyse observations of synoptic phenomena
- Formulate problems in a quasi-geostrophic framework and solve them by means of analytical, or simple numerical, methods.
