Aim and Content
The course will provide the students with basic knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology in order to qualify the students for further studies. The students will gain insight in experimental molecular biology and an overview of biotechnological methods.
Students will acquire knowledge of:
- The building stones of cells: structure, synthesis and function of DNA, RNA and proteins
- Hemoglobin and myoglobin; their molecular structure and function
- Enzymes and enzyme kinetics
- Role and structure of lipids
- Cellular energy metabolism
- The nucleus and fundamental genetic mechanisms such as replication and transcription and their regulation
- Diversity of immunoglobulins at the DNA level as well as very basic immunology
- Translation
- Cellular signal transduction
- Cellular regulation
- Cellular metabolism
Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course, the student should have acquired basic knowledge and insight into the biochemistry and function of cells, as well as knowledge of cellular regulation. The student should be able to describe the basic structures, properties and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. In addition, the student should be familiar with safety regulations in laboratory courses, have an overview of biochemical and cell biological experimental methods and have developed practical skills in some biochemical and molecular biological methods.
