Bachelor\'s degree programme in Aquaculture |
The Norwegian aquaculture industry is a growing export industry. The industry requires knowledge of breeding, nutrition, engineering, product quality and economics. This study gives an introduction to these topics and is primarily meant to prepare students for a Master’s degree study in the field of aquaculture.
After completing the programme, students are qualified to apply for the Master's degree programme in Aquaculture and the Master's degree programme in Intensive Fish Farming at UMB.
Admission requirements
Higher Education Entrance Qualification + specific courses within science and mathematics from upper secondary school.
Internationalisation, study abroad and cooperation
Study abroad can be included into a student's study plan when the courses chosen are approved as part of the degree. Cooperation is carried out between the Institute for Aquaculture Research, Dept. of Economics and Resource Management and Dept. of Mathematical Sciences and Technology.
Related studies
The basic courses of physiology, nutrition and breeding are taught together with the Bachelor's degree students in Animal Science.
Learning goals
At the end of their studies, students will have general knowledge regarding breeding, nutrition, engineering and economics. This knowledge is based on the programme's basic courses in math, statistics, chemistry and physics. Students will gain insight into the aquaculture industry, which societal values it stands for and which societal problems it is facing. The learning goal for the study can also be seen as a qualification for the Master's degree programme in Aquaculture
Teaching and evaluation methods
Teaching methods vary between lectures, laboratory sessions, excursions and independent work. The courses in the programme have various forms of examination, such as continuous evaluation and final examination, both oral and written.
Programme contents and structure
All study areas in this programme have 120 credits of required courses, including: Scientific Theory 10 credits, Math 10 credits, Statistics 10 credits, Chemistry/Biochemistry/Genetics 10 credits, Economics 5 credits, Physics 10 credits, Introduction to Aquaculture 20 credits,
Aquaculture Economics 15 credits, Disease Control 10 credits, Production Techniques 20 credits. The 45 study credits in italics count towards the 80 credits required for specialisation in the Bachelor's degree programme.
Students choose among five study areas: 1) breeding/nutrition, 2) economics/nutrition, 3) economics/breeding, 4) engineering or 5) individual.
Specialisation requirements
Students must have a specialisation of at least 80 credits. To qualify for a specialisation, the following minimum requirements for the specialisation must be met:
Specialisation Breeding/Nutrition: Statistics 10 credits, Chemistry/Biochemistry 10 credits, Physiology 10 credits, Breeding 15 credits, Nutrition 15 credits.
Specialisation Economics/Nutrition: Chemistry/Biochemistry 20 credits, Economics 20 credits, Nutrition 15 credits.
Specialisation Economics/Breeding: Statistics 10 credits, Breeding 15 credits, Economics 25 credits.
Specialisation Engineering: Math 10 credits, Physics 10 credits, Engineering 30 credits.
Study credits within the above area of specialisation are the minimum for the study area chosen by the student and approved in the context of the study plan. When the specialisation is fulfilled but the study area requirements are not, the study area is determined as individual.
Student advising
The study programme has its own advisor. In addition, teachers give technical supervision to the students. Email:

Quality assurance
In all courses, the responsible teacher will give a mid-semester evaluation. In addition, an evaluation is done at the end of the semester for all courses. All final evaluations are taken up by the Study Committee and reported to the Department Board. The contents of the programme are evaluated continuously.
