Financial support?
Cathrine Strømø
As a student abroad you usually have more money to spend than if you study in Norway. The exchange programmes Erasmus and Nordplus have favourable scholarship arrangements, and Lånekassen (the State Educational Loan Fund) compensates for increased travel costs and possible student fees.
The support from
Lånekassen comes in addition to what you get through Erasmus and Nordplus. The total loan sum is approximately the same as if you study in Norway. From 2002-2003, Lånekassen gives the same basic support for education in Norway and abroad (NOK 8000 in total each month make up the grant and educational loan). Lånekassen requires that your educational arrangements at the host university get prior recognition as a part of your education and that it does not lead to delays in your study. Remember the green attachment! Note that Lånekassen will register you as delayed in your studies if you do not get final recognition of the courses after the study period abroad. The courses that you have attended abroad must be a part of your degree to get them approved as grant-entitled credits.
Financial support for travel
Lånekassen’s financial travel support for students abroad is 70% grant and 30% loan. You can get support for one return trip if the study period lasts longer than four weeks. For study periods longer than six months, you get support for two return trips.
Nordplus
As a Nordplus student you can get ca. NOK 7000 each term when you are abroad. If you go to Iceland, you get DKK 5000 in addition.
Erasmus
As an Erasmus student you can get ca. NOK 1800 each month when you are abroad. This grant presupposes that you get a place at one of the universities that NLH has an agreement with.
Student fees/school tuition
Some educational institutions operate with student fees.
Lånekassen gives grants and loans that cover all or parts of the school tuition (tuition support), maximum NOK 102 320 for a whole year. Up to the first NOK 52 320 of this, 70% is a grant and 30% is a loan. In addition, you can get an extra loan of maximum NOK 50 000 if the school tuition is higher than NOK 52 320.
Erasmus, Nordplus and bilateral agreements have exemption from (or reduction in) student fees.
Language course
When the teaching language is not English or Scandinavian, you can get an additional grant of NOK 15 000 from Lånekassen if you take a language course before the actual study period begins. This does not apply to language students. The course must last at least four weeks, and the following study period must last at least one term.
Apply for several grants/scholarships
Below you see a selection of organisations that give scholarships to students abroad. You find more information on the organisations’ own web pages.
Norges forskningsråd (The Research Council of Norway), International grants
Norges forskningsråd offers scholarships to young researchers and students planning to study abroad. The scholarships apply to approximately 30 different countries and the stay can last from one summer to a whole year. Each year, Norges forskningsråd publishes the brochure “Stipend til utlandet – for studenter og forskere” (Scholarships abroad – for students and researchers). The closing date for applications for most scholarships for study and research periods abroad under the so-called
culture agreements (study and research scholarships and summer scholarships) is 1 October or 1 December.
British Chevening Scholarships
The Chevening scholarship is announced each year from the British Council in Norway. Applicants must be studying for a Master’s or Doctoral degree.
The U.S.-Norway Fulbright Foundation for Educational Exchange
Each year, the Fulbright office in Norway gives out scholarships to students on a master or doctoral level.
The Norway-America Association
Each year, the Norway-America Association gives out scholarships to students wanting to study in North America on basic, intermediate and/or master level.
Research scholarship from your department?
Several of the departments at NLH give out limited funds to research projects. Procedures and deadlines vary, so contact the student advisor in your department to find out if you for instance can get support for the field work for your Master’s thesis abroad.
