Getting to Aalesund

Aalesund, which is located on the west coast of Norway, is easy to reach by plane, and there are many daily flights (45 minutes) from Oslo Airport, Gardermoen to Aalesund Airport, Vigra - an international airport just outside Aalesund. See http://www.braathens.no for further information regarding flights, etc.
If you come through Bergen, there are four daily flights to Aalesund. From Bergen you can also take one of the modern passenger coasters 'Hurtigruten'.
From Oslo or Gardermoen (Oslo Airport) you may also go by train to Dombaas or Aandalsnes, and take a bus from there to Aalesund. This travel will, however, take approximately 7 hours.
You can also go by bus from Oslo or Gardermoen directly to Aalesund (this will take approximately the same as going by by train).

Cost of living

Compared to other parts of Europe living costs in Norway are not among the cheapest. A room at a student hostel in Aalesund (see below, Accommodation) in the cheapest category (15 m2) costs NOK 1.710 per month (2001). A dinner at the student canteen costs from NOK 45-50. A cinema ticket costs NOK 75.

Public transport in Aalesund costs NOK 18 per ticket. However, a monthly card, valid for all public transport in Aalesund, costs about NOK 380. Cigarettes and alcohol are very expensive because of imposed taxes. Restaurants should be carefully chosen. The prices vary a great deal. A glass of beer costs from NOK 35 (for ½ litre) at the cheapest and up to more than NOK 60 (for 1/3 litre) at the most expensive.

According to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund, the basis for granting of loan/stipend is an estimated total monthly expenditure of NOK 6,000.

Accommodation

Most exchange students will be staying at the student hostels/homes run by the student union, Aalesund Student Union, Studentsamskipnaden, Aalesund (ÅSS). The student homes consist of single rooms with bathrooms and a kitchen shared with 3 other students at a monthly price (July 2001) of NOK 1,710. There is an extra charge for telephone-, TV- and internet connection of NOK 100 per month. When moving in students will have to pay deposit of NOK 2.000. This will be paid back when leaving the room. You may get a higher standard room with your own kitchen (20 m2) at a price of NOK 2,200 per month and a deposit of NOK 2.500. Be aware that you may have to accept a room in this more expensive category if the cheaper rooms are already hired. If you do not arrive at the beginning of the semester, it might be that all rooms in the student homes are occupied. There are also apartments (40 m2 and 44 m2) at a monthly rent of NOK 2.950 and NOK 3.060. The deposit for apartments is NOK 3.000. Most of the apartments are occupied by families.

Bed clothing and kitchen equipment, cutlery and crockery are usually not at hand. There is a responsible caretaker at the student homes. Ask him/her for practical advice/help!

The rent is paid for entire months. To get easy access to the student homes, you should, if possible, arrive there on a weekday before 15:00 o’clock.

Students are requested to send information regarding exact time of arrival and flight number to AUC so that the room can be prepared and key delivery arranged.

Insurance

All students from EU/EEA countries must bring a valid E111 certificate, obtainable in their own home countries, which entitles them to medical care under the Norwegian National Health Scheme (a minor patient’s fee must be paid). Expenses related
to dental care and illnesses contracted before arrival in Norway are not covered.

It is the student’s own responsibility to make insurance arrangements for any accident, illness, injury, loss or damage to persons or property resulting from, or in any way connected with, the study period in Norway.
The Student Welfare Organization (ÅSS) pays no indemnity against loss or injury, but is
considering whether they should implement an insurance arrangement for students in industrial placement/training periods.

Libraries

The college library and reading rooms are open Monday -Thursday 08:30 - 21:00.
Friday 08:30 - 19:00, and Saturday 10:00 - 14:00.

Banks

There is also a local bank (Sparebanken Moere) close to the College's premises. To open a bank account you will need a personal (Norwegian) ID number and this might take up to two week to arrange. A credit card (e.g. VISA, Mastercard, etc.) is recommended. For less frequent bank cards you should contact you local bank before leaving and find out to what extent it can be used abroad. Most of the major banks in Norway have offices in Aalesund.

Bus transport

Aalesund Bilruter (the local bus company) has buses passing the premises at AUC approximately every tenth minute from 06:30 in the morning to 17:00 in the afternoon. A single trip costs NOK 19, but if you buy monthly cards the price per trip is much more reasonable.
