PROGRAMMES IN ENGINEERINGCivil EngineeringThe bachelor programme (3 years) in civil engineering specialises in building construction. The student shall acquire the knowledge and skills which are necessary for solving work assignments related to planning, project description, dimensioning and building construction both on land and offshore. In addition the course of studies should assist the student in developing attitudes and social skills needed for working in projects made up of persons with differing technical backgrounds. The study should also provide knowledge and attitudes for best using resources for optimal results both in terms of the inner and outer environment during an entire construction project. New needs and environmental regulations require flexible solutions and a better selection of building materials. This applies to new building projects as well as to improving and renovating existing buildings. It is the college’s goal to develop knowledge in these areas and to supply the region with well-qualified civil engineers. Regional business life is mainly based on commerce related to the ocean and has special needs for new constructions, maintenance and rehabilitating constructions in the maritime milieu. This study will give students the knowledge and skills required to solve these kinds of construction tasks. The faculty has a wide range of contacts with the local industry and public sector. During the last semester of the three year engineering education the students undertake a research project. These final projects are carried out in cooperation with industry. Faculty research: ”Life cycle analysis of concrete constructions in maritime environment” Mechanical Engineering and Naval Product Development and DesignThis bachelor programme (3 years) specialises in naval architecture, design technology and marine engineering. The students shall acquire interdisciplinary competence necessary to perform product development in a systematic manner. The students shall be able to collaborate and communicate with colleagues in multidisiplinary product development processes.Practical prduct development processes which emphasize creativity and innovation is major part of the study. This is carried out in labs where the students develop their own products from ideas to prototype. In this way the students develop professional skills. Many of the subjects require the completion of individual projects and group projects. The faculty has close contact with the advanced maritime industrial cluster in the Aalesund region. The present programme has recently been developed in close cooperation with the local maritime cluster. Faculty research: ”Module based ship design” Electrical and Electronic Engineering, AutomationThe bachelor programme (3 years) in automation offers a specialisation in cybernetics, which concentrates on analogue and digital control theory and digital signal processing. Cybernetics has developed to be a useful tool in modelling and steering dynamic systems, applicable in many technical fields. Our spesialisation is industrial cybernetics, knowledge based systems and artificial intelligence. This programme shall provide a good theoretical and practical education for students who plan to work as cybernetic engineers. The students shall develop the ability to collaborate and communicate cybernetics with colleagues and others and to work in a multidisciplinary environment. They shall develop relevant understanding of ethical considerations in relation to cybernetics and stimulate reflection on development and application. Faculty research: ”System dynamics in fisheries (of cod, capelin, herring)” Electrical and Electronic Engineering, TelematicsThe bachelor programme (3 years) in telematics focuses on analogue and digital processing, transmission and distribution of information. The main supporting subjects are electronics and digital signal processing. The programme shall provide a good theoretical and practical education for students who plan to work as telematics engineers. The students shall develop the ability to collaborate and communicate telematics with colleagues and others and to work in a multidisciplinary environment. They shall develop relevant understanding of ethical considerations in relation to cybernetics and stimulate reflection on development and application. Computer EngineeringThe three-year Bachelor of Computer Engineering program at Aalesund University College is designed to introduce to our students the body of knowledge required for modern computing and to establish a theoretical as well as practice-oriented competence in basic computer engineering. The programme consists of core subject areas in addition to three areas which receive particular focus: Local and wide area computer networks, Windows-based as well as Unix-based, Computer graphics with an emphasis on visualisation, 3D modelling and simulation and finally Systems design and application development with an emphasis on databases. Methodology and project oriented approach are particularly emphasized in this programme, as well as developing relevant understanding of ethical considerations in relation to information and communication technology, and stimulate critical reflection on development and application. Many of the subjects require the completion of individual projects and group projects, and a final student group project occupies the major part of the last semester of the programme. The faculty of computer engineering has joint projects with several other institutes, such as Institute of maritime education, of product development and design and of geographical information systems. Together with institute of maritime education, the faculty operate and do research on large visual navigation- and ship handling simulators, on the flexible use of a large screen visualization theatre, screen size 160 m2, and is currently constructing Norway’s first high-speed ship simulator cockpit. |
