BIOLOGY WITH CHEMISTRY

Duration:

1 YEAR

Entry requirements:

Minimum college entrance requirements.

Aims and objectives:

Biology is a natural science which aims to explain all aspects of living nature.
The subject is very comprehensive and includes many disciplines which often overlap with each other. Biology borders against, and to a large extent builds on knowledge from other basic subjects such as chemistry, physics and mathematics.
The study is approved and equivalent to studies at other colleges and universities. It is also approved as part of a Bachelor of Science/Master of Science study at the universities and colleges. The study or elements of it is very well suited as part of further education.

The basic courses qualify one to teach in high school. It gives credits, and also exemption from courses in closed studies as medicine, bio-engineering, pharmacy, veterinary, agriculture- and colleges of fishery and aquaculture. Other combinations of courses within chemistry and biology are also possible.

Teaching methods:

In combination with lectures, the courses consists of a great deal of practical work in the laboratories. In addition, botany and zoology has a compulsory field course off campus which lasts about 14 days. The field course in botany consists of 3 workdays in local biotopes (marine, limnic and terrestrial) and 2 days in biotopes from mountain areas.
The field course in zoology is arranged in May/June and is divided in a WAY similar to the field course in botany.
Parts of the field courses are to be financed by the students themselves.

Structure and activities:

The study includes a section of basic terms within biology. In addition the students concentrate on marine courses as well as in biochemistry. The work both in laboratories and the field as well as off campus is a significant part of the course in biology.

Biology with chemistry includes 60 credits which corresponds to a 1 year study divided into the following courses:

15 cr. Principles of chemistry (required)
15 cr. Introduction to marine sciences (optional)
15 cr. Cell biology, genetics and ecology (optional)
15 cr. Zoology (optional)
15 cr. Botany (optional)
15 cr. Principles of biochemistry (optional)

By using an extra semester for 15 credits in zoology and biochemistry respectively, the students will have a basic course in biology (60 credits) and 30 credits from a basic course in chemistry, which is equivalent to corresponding courses at the universities. General biochemistry is considered both as a course in chemistry as well as in biology.
