National Health Insurance

Students from the Nordic countries, the UK and Northern Ireland benefit from bilateral agreements which their respective countries have entered with Norway. As a result they do not need social security coverage from their home country.

All students from EU/EEA countries must bring with them a valid E111 or E128 certificate, obtainable in their home countries, which entitles them to medical care in accordance with the Norwegian National Health Scheme. Expenses related to illnesses contracted before arrival in Norway, dental care, and eye treatment are not covered.

After arrival, exchange students from other parts of the world may apply for voluntary enrolment in the Norwegian National Health Scheme. The minimum period of stay for qualifying as an applicant is more than 3 months. After having stayed in Norway for more than a year, one is automatically insured through the National Insurance Scheme "Folketrygden".

Please note that the National Insurance Scheme does not apply before students are registered at their institutions; when they have completed their studies; or during travels abroad during the semester.

It is the responsibility of students to take out their own insurance. The insurance must cover any accident, illness, injury, loss or damage to people or property resulting from, or in any way connected to, the study period in Norway.

Students are advised to take out a travel insurance policy for the duration of their stay in Norway, before leaving their home country.

National Identification Number

If you are staying in Norway for six months or longer, you must obtain a National Identity Number. This number consists of 11 digits, and is made up of your date of birth and 5 other digits. You apply for your ID number from the National Population Registry Office (Folketrygden).
