Streaming video with VLC

Submitted by Jeremy Cook on 2005-01-03 14:20 — last modified 2006-07-13 10:30 —

A few examples of how I got video streaming to work with VLC. Some of the VLC documentation examples did not work for me without further experimentation.

Streaming HTTP:

Could not get this to work apart from audio only. IN this case in the server in the stream output dialogue, set HTTP but leave the address and port fields blank. Then in the client you open a network stream using HTTP, and set the URL to http://name of server:8080/

Streaming UDP - unicast:

IN the server Stream output dialogue, select UDP, set address/port to address/port of client. Use encapsulation method MPEG TS (the only option available!), no transcoding. In the client select udp and set the port number appropriately.

Streaming UDP - multicast:

In the dialogue window, as above, but use a multicast address and port appropriate for your site for the destination address.

Streaming UDP through multicast bridge:

Use this if you need to stream a unicast source out onto the multicast backbone. Obtain QuickBridge, and add an entry for your site in the vv.dat file. For example::

VM1 a 224.2.158.90 54900 50120 VMStudio 1

(don't worry about the a and v in the second field as we dont need different streams for audio and video). Start QuickBridge for this entry:

  QuickBridge.ksh -s -r VM1

Then just put the address and port of your bridge server as the destination in the UDP field of the VLC dialogue.
