Requirements

The admission requirements listed below do not apply to exchange students (e.g. Nordplus and Erasmus) studying at HiST for periods of between 3 and 12 months while they are simultaneously enrolled at their home university.
Academic requirements

For bachelor studies applicants must meet the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse), and fulfil the language requirements in Norwegian and English. To some study programmes you need specific subjects (e.g. Mathematics and Science) or work experience in addition to the general requirements.

Applicants from European countries are eligible for admission upon completion of the secondary school leaving certificate that provides the basis for admission to university studies in the home country. Entrance requirements for applicants from non-European countries may include one or two years of university studies in addition to secondary school.

For master studies applicants must hold a Bachelor degree comparable to a similar degree from Norwegian higher education. For each master programme, there will be specific requirements to the content of the bachelor degree.

Applicants must pass one of the following tests:

  • Test of English as a foreign language (ETS TOEFL®) with a minimum score of 500 (paper based) or 170 (computer based) For information: www.toefl.org

Others who are exempted are applicants holding a BA degree in English, as well as applicants from African countries with a BA/BSc/BEng degree where the language of instruction has been English and those who have passed English as a subject at GCE A-level with a grade C or better.

How to finance your studies

Students admitted through scholarship programs, such as the Quota Programme or exchange programmes such as Nordplus, Socrates/Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci are not required to submit proof of sufficient funding for their stay in Norway.

All other students, including those on bilateral agreements not covered by the European programmes mentioned above, are responsible for financing their own studies. The Immigration Authorities require documentation showing how the period of study being applied for will be financed. You must document funds of NOK 81,400 (approx 10000 Euro) for the 2007/08 academic year. Please contact your local Norwegian embassy for more information.
