Internet services at student hostels

• NEW INFORMATION 2006 08 23: At Grivi, Gullbring and Langkåshaugen/Gymnasbakken hostels you may only connect 1 computer/MAC-address to the network. This is done to prevent distribution of invalid IP-addresses.

• HiT offers IT services for students living in SiTels student hostels and in some other student homes with connection directly to the infrastructur for HiT's IT services.
• The owners of the student hostels are reponsible for the function of the local networks in the student hostels. For users in these networks HiT offers connection to HiT's network and limited services in the Internet.
• The scope of network services is restricted by network security reasons and the technical and administrative capacity of HiT's IT services group.
• Services that is essential for the educational activities, like e-mail and Classfronter, will be given priority.
• Some well-known services are closed because of risk for virus attacks, i.e. sending of e-mail using TCP port 25. Use Web-mail services (i.e. studpost.hit.no and hotmail.com).
• Services offered in local networks in student hostels shall not be available for other networks in HiT or from the Internet. UDP ports will be closed and TCP sessions may only be established by computers inside the student hostel networks.
• File sharing sevices may cause high load on our technical capacity. Do not share files on your pc with the Internet.
• The IT services group regret that we will not respond to requests from single students for change of services for the student hostel networks. Exceptions from the general policy is resource-demanding and will reduce the quality of the general network services. Requests will, however, be taken into consideration in our total analyses and planning of HiT's network services.
