Thinking solely of profitability within industry is no longer enough. That is how the field industrial ecology emerged — as an answer to the industry' search for solutions to the environmental problems.

Students taking Industrial Ecology learn how to use the ecosystems in nature as a model for the shaping of goods and services. You will acquire an overall understanding of technological, financial and social aspects of the environmental challenges in industry. In addition you will have practical training in methods of evaluating the environmental quality of various products and systems and their life cycles.

This study is suited for ...

... those who want to use their skills to solve important environmental issues.

... those who want to take all aspects into consideration in making the production and consumption of goods and services as environmentally unloading as possible.

... those who are interested in the design of sustainable products and systems, and strategies for the implementation of these new solutions.

... those who see the necessity in integrating environmental considerations into politics and management.

... those who want to work in team with people of different backgrounds, and who wish to combine their own professional qualifications with other’s in order to create something new.

The Master’s programme in Industrial Ecology is offered by the Industrial Ecology Program (IndEcol) and is a two-year long, international and interdisciplinary study aimed at both Norwegian and international students. The language of instruction is English.

“Industrial ecology is the study of the flows of materials and energy in industrial and consumer activities, of the effect of these flows on the environment, and of the influence of economic, political, regulatory and social factors on the flow, use and transformation of resources. The objective of industrial ecology is to understand better how we can integrate environmental concerns into our economic activities. This integration, an ongoing process, is necessary if we are to address current and future environmental concerns.”
