UDI has no set test for converts

It is not correct, as it has been claimed in several medias lately, that the Norwegian Directorate for Immigration uses a set test or exam to decide whether asylum seekers have converted to Christianity.

UDIs interviews of asylum seekers does not function as an exam. The interview is part of an overall assesment to decide if the applicant is in need of protection. All asylum seekers needs to explain why they are in need of protection. Every applications for asylum is then assessed on an individual basis. Convertion does not automatically give grounds for asylum, but will be a part of the overall assessment whether a permit is to be granted.

If the UDI is unsure whether the information regarding the convertion is credible, it is necessary to ask more questions in order get more clarity into the issue.

The UDI needs to assess the risk for persecution for a convert asylum seeker in case of a return to the home country. The UDI consequently needs to explore the basis of the convertion and consider this along with the availabe information on the level of risk associated with a return. To access the facts in the case, it is necessary to ask question relevant to the situation, and if anything is unclear it is necessary to delve deeper into the grounds on which the application was submitted.

UDI is focusing on persecution based upon religion and gender, and does not return anyone that has a credible need for protection. The aim is to protcet those in need of protection, but also to reveal when religion is mis-used as grounds for protection.
