Extension of the EEA: Bulgaria and Romania members from August 1 2007
The negotiations between Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein, and the EU to extend the European Economic Area (EEA) to include Bulgaria and Romania, are completed. The agreement was signed on July 25 and was put into practice August 1.
The implication is that the citizens of Bulgaria and Romania may apply for permits after the EEA regulations from August 1 2007. Applications may be submitted to the police in Norway or at a Norwegian foreign service mission. There is no fee to be paid with the application. If the citizens still choose to apply for a permit based On the ordinary rules, however, a fee still applies.
It is expected that the transitional rules will apply for employees from Romania and Bulgaria, the same rules that apply for employees of the other ‘new EU-members’ - the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia.
Please note that residence permits granted on another foundation than as employees are the same for all who apply for permits based on the EEA-rules, no matter if applicant is a citizen of ‘new’ or ‘old’ EU members.
