Strong increase in work permits for skilled workers from India

The number of skilled workers from India is more than dobbled over the last two years. In the first six months of the year, about 20 % of the work permits for skilled workers were granted to Indian citizens.

1200 persons were granted work permits for skilled workers in the first six months of 2007. This number is doubled from the same period last year.

Indian citizens is by far the largest national group in the statistics for skilled workers, while the US, Russia and the Philippines also make out significant groups. The skilled workers from India is mainly working in research and development, or as technical consultants. Most of the citizens from the US, Russia and the Philippines are working in education and public administration.

About 25 % of the valid work permits for skilled workers were granted to women. They work mainly with health and social services, education and public administration.

- We notice that women with work permits as skilled workers choose to work in traditionally female-dominated professions, while men wish to work in traditionally male-dominated professions, says Morten Hansen, acting Head of the Managed Migration Department.
