In 2014 it has been 10 years since the Department of Biology was born. In 2004, the process of merging the four smaller departments was completed, and the scientific staff at the Department of Botany, Micro Biology, Zoological Department and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Biology all agreed to gather forces in one large department, which later was joined by the Centre for Environmental and Resource Studies.

Although BIO's history is young, we build our department on a long and successful tradition. The science of biology at the University of Bergen can be traced back to the establishment of the Bergen Museum (now the University Museum of Bergen) in 1825, where nature and culture was in focus. Up until the establishment of the University in 1946, and continuing still today, biology has had a great and natural place in the University's history, with both marine and terrestrial biology in focus.

Throughout this anniversary year, we have planned a wide range of activities that will display the biological diversity and vitality of what we do, both aimed at each other and our colleagues in other departments, but also for schools and the public in general.

Preliminary program for the anniversary semester looks like this:

06th of  March: Open house for high schools in the area (page in Norwegian)

26th of April: Open house for all interested (more information to come)

30th of April: The official opening of bioCEED, Centre for excellence in education

09th of May: Alumni day  (more information to come)

15th of May: Scientific seminar (more information to come)

More information will be available continuously on our websites, and through BIO-info, infoscreens, email and Facebook!
