Aim and Content
The course provides an introduction to the theory of modern pulse NMR spectroscopy for liquid state systems, with an emphasis on product operator theory for first order spin systems in one and two dimensional homo and heteronuclear pulse experiments. Pulse sequence diagrams, phase cycling, gradient selection and coherence transfer pathways/schemes are discussed. The product operator theory makes it possible to analyse and explain a range of important pulse experiments to which the simple vector model is not applicable. The practical aspects of the pulse sequences that are discussed will already be known to the students from the KJEM251 course. For some pulse sequences the present course will provide a more thorough treatment of a selection of the following themes: Second order spin systems, relaxation, the nuclear Overhauser effect, chemical exchange or diffusion. Suitable simulation software packages are used to illustrate the theoretical principles and to actually make it possible to use product operators in practice.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course KJEM306 the student should be able to:
- explain and discuss spin systems and simple applications of the theory such systems.
- analyse NMR pulse sequences for systems in the liquid state using product operators and compare the vector model and product operator theory for these pulse sequences.
- explain the use of phase cycling and gradient selection in NMR pulse sequences.
- demonstrate how coherence selection pathways/schemes together with pulse sequence diagrams summarizes how first order spin systems evolve during simple NMR pulse sequences.
- perform simulations of pulse sequences, that are used in a real NMR laboratorium, employing selected software packages.
