Aim and Content
The course provides a taxonomy of multicomponent systems, and an overview of the central techniques for resolution and quantification of mixtures analysed using multidetection instruments. Multivariate detection limits are covered, as are generalised resolution parameters. The influence of noise, drift, baseline effects and pre-treatment of data upon the results from the different methods will be covered. The exercises are performed on a computer. The methods are used on chromatographic and spectroscopic data from complex mixtures of industrial, environmental and medical (including herbal) origin.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course KJEM325 the student will be able to:
- explain the principles behind different methods for curve resolution of multicomponent systems.
- assess the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods.
- describe and explain instrumental factors influencing data quality and structure in multidetection systems, and the importance these factors have when analysing the data.
- program curve resolution techniques in MATLAB.
- perform an independent curve resolution on a computer using self made or pre-existing software.
