For Students: How to Apply in the UiB Online Application Service

Students who have been nominated by their home institution must complete their application for exchange to UiB in the online application service for students, "Søknadsweb".

Step-by-Step Guidelines

Step 1: Log in

Before you can apply your home university must nominate you in our online nomination system. After they have done so, you will receive an e-mail with a confirmation of the nomination and a link to the online application service SøknadsWeb.

Now you must complete the application by logging in with your e-mail-address and password (the password is sent in a separate e-mail). Your e-mail must be the same as the one your university registered when they nominated you.

Step 2: Contact information

Please make sure that the information under ‘personal information’ is correct: contact address, mobile phone no., preferred language and whether your education is from another institution than the University of Bergen.

Contact address: Please do not use a P.O.Box address or your university address. Please also enter the city code/post code and city even though it is not marked with an asterisk to make your address complete.

Click on "OK - save" to continue. You will then be directed to the "My application"-page.

Please note that your nomination and application is found on the "My application"-page and NOT under the "New application"-page (so do not click on "New application in the menu).

Step 3: New application

On the "New application"-page you will see the details of your nomination. First you must choose if you are currently a bachelor’s level student or a master’s level student. You may also apply for a Norwegian language course. Please refer to the website for the Norwegian language courses for more information. Please note that you can only apply for one Norwegian language course.

Please note that even though you are only registered at one faculty, you may still apply for courses at other faculties. Note that if you select both regular courses and a Norwegian language course, the application will show 'Priority 1' and 'Priority 2'. You can ignore this, as the course applications are not ranked.

Select courses

Please select the courses you wish to take during your exchange stay at UiB. Please read the course descriptions carefully and make sure you fulfill all prerequisites before choosing.

If you have an alternative study plan, you can choose among these alternatives in the course list:

  • Practice placement (Erasmus placement/Leonardo da Vinci)
  • Thesis/ Project/ Lab work (It is your own responsibility to contact academics at a department/faculty directly to acquire a supervisor if needed)
  • Clinical rotation-medicine/dentistry
  • UNIS (Applicants to UNIS must apply to both UiB and UNIS by 15 April)
  • Grieg Academy-performance or composition

All applicants to ENG courses at the Department of Foreign Languages (courses in English linguistics, culture, literature etc.) must upload documentation of English language proficiency (see “Required documents for exchange students” below).

If you have knowledge of Norwegian you can also apply for courses taught in Norwegian. Please find the courses here: www.uib.no/utdanning and contact us to give the course code and title so that we can add the courses to your application.

Step 4: Upload documents

Here you must upload the relevant documents for your application.

All documents should be uploaded under the "Education" section (or under "Other documents"). Please note: Exchange students do not have to upload documentation for work experience.

Required documents for exchange students:

  • Offical transcript of records in English or a Scandinavian language issued by your home university with at least 60 ECTS credits. A transcript of records is an official statement listing courses/subjects you have completed at your university.
  • Or, if the above is not available: a translation of your transcript of records in English or a Scandinavian language in addition to an official transcript of records in the original language issued by your home university. (We accept a non-official translation if stamped and signed by an officer at the partner university)
  • Letter of motivation (only applies to applicants to English courses at the Department of Foreign Languages, courses with the code ENG)
  • Letter of recommendation (only applies to applicants to English courses at the Department of Foreign Languages, courses with the code ENG)
  • Learning Agreement (Erasmus students only). Please note that the Learning Agreement is issued by your home university.

Applicants to English courses (starting with the course code ENG): see "Applicants to the Faculty of Humanities" for more information about the admission requirements.

Add courses or change the application

If you wish to add new courses after you have completed your application, please log on to SoknadsWeb and click on 'My application'. When you have added or deleted the courses, please contact us at exchange-students@uib.no to let us know about the update.
If you wish to change your application in any way and are unsuccessful, please do not delete the application, but contact us at exchange-students@uib.no.

Deadlines

Applications must be completed online no later than:

  • 15 May for the autumn semester (August-December)
  • 15 October for the spring semester (January-June)

UiB's partner institutions must nominate students in the University of Bergen’s online nomination system before 15 May and 15 October for the autumn and spring semester respectively.

Applicants to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Please note that the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences may offer additional courses that are not available for admission before semester start in August/January and several courses with field trips, lab work etc. which have limited capacity.

For this reason we encourage all applicants to this faculty to apply as early as possible when the application form has opened. Please check if the courses require specific previous knowledge.

Applicants to the Faculty of Humanities

The Faculty of Humanities offers a number of courses taught in other foreign languages, such as French, German, Italian and Spanish, and courses in Norwegian philology and literature (taught in Norwegian) that may be relevant for exchange students with a good command of Norwegian.

Please note that there are specific admission requirements for all exchange students who wish to take English courses at the Department of Foreign Languages. The courses are theorectically demanding, and presuppose a strong command of English. We recommend a competence level in English of B2 or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Two documents must be submitted with your application*:

  • Letter of Motivation

In the Letter of Motivation you should explain what your academic ambitions are and how they relate to your choice of English courses at our university. The Letter of Motivation should be about 1 page long.

  • Letter of Recommendation

The Letter of Recommendation needs to be written by a professor who knows you at your home university. The letter should assess your academic strengths and should give an evaluation of your proficiency in English. The Letter of Recommendation should be no more than 1 page long.

  • Diagnostic test on site

Once you arrive at the University of Bergen you will be required to do a diagnostic test on site to assess your writing competency in English.

*Native speakers of English are exempted and do not need to submit such documentation.
