Quality of education and quality assurance

The Quality Assurance System presents measures and tools regarding the work academic communities do in relation to quality of education, including the learning environment and ethics.

The UiB Quality Assurance System is described in the Handbook for Quality Assurance of University Programmes of Study. This handbook describes a number of measures and tools that form the basis for the work academic communities do to assure quality of education in their fields.

Handbook for Quality Assurance of University Programmes of Study
The handbook forms the basis for the systematic work on maintaining and developing the quality of education at the University. The Handbook can be downloaded here.

Some of the central quality assurance measures discussed in the handbook include applicable rules for the evaluation of educational measures and programmes, such as guidelines for programme evaluation and course evaluations (see Chapter 13). The handbook also discusses establishing and discontinuing programmes, and provides an overview of the allocation of responsibility and deadlines for reporting changes (Chapter 16).

Memorandum on "quality of education"

This was completed in 2012, and aims to provide a basis for the further development of a quality culture among UiB employees and students. Central questions in the memorandum include: What characterises quality, how to develop a quality culture at the institution, and to what extent can quality be measured?

Quality Assurance Reports

This is UiB's central archive for educational reports, programme and course evaluations, and other documents relevant to quality of education and work on quality assurance. Reports for the use of funds received from the Programme for evaluation and quality development (PEK) are also entered in the Quality Assurance Reports database.

Programme for evaluation and quality development (PEK)

Provides the incentives for the University's Quality Assurance System for education.  The grants to different projects are made based on an application/nomination. Each year, the Education Committee decides the areas that are to be given priority. Funds are usually announced before the summer.

The Owl Award

The Owl Award is UiB's internal award for quality of education, and is presented by the University's Education Committee to academic communities that can document particularly successful quality of education measures. The letter announcing the PEK funds also contains deadlines for nominating candidates for the Owl Award.

The learning environment

The learning environment is an important part of student life and is very central to the quality of education. You can find more information about the work on the learning environment, the Learning Environment Committee (LMU) and relevant learning environment measures online.

The Learning Environment Handbook

is a handbook for students about the physical and psychosocial learning environment.

The Learning Environment Award

Students and student organisations can nominate candidates for UiB's Learning Environment Award. The purpose of the award is to recognise communities or individuals at the University who have been especially successful in facilitating learning through academic, pedagogical and social efforts, or by making adaptations to the physical or psychosocial learning environment.

Education reports

All Faculties must prepare an annual report about the educational activities (education report) in the Faculty, with a deadline in April. See Chapter 15 of the Handbook for Quality Assurance of University Programmes of Study for more information about the content of the education report.  The Faculty education reports form the basis for the annual education report for the institution, which is prepared by the Section for Education Development and Evaluation.
