Funding for doctoral training activities

PhD candidates admitted to the organized Doctoral education at the Faculty of Psychology, and with documented progress according to the agreed plan, are eligible to apply for travel funds from the Faculty.

Guidelines for assigning funding for research activities Approved by the PhD committee 27/10-2010.

The deadline for applications is March 1st.

Doctoral education activities

The support should cover expenses related to travels or studies/research abroad that the PhD candidate can not cover through his/her general annum or through project support. Candidates who have already graduated will not be granted support.
The most common examples of eligible purposes, is participation in national and local courses and conference participation with a presentation from their own PhD project. Conference participation without presentation will not be given priority.
Each PhD candidate can only submit one application per year (for a specific purpose), and the application can be granted up to a maximum of NOK 20 000, - in support. It can be applied for purposes for the period 1 March to 31 March the following year (a total of 13 months).

Recommendation from supervisor (must be enclosed) and approved progress report (need not be attached) is a prerequisite for allocation of funds.

If there are more applicants than it is allocated funds, applications will be prioritized according to the following criteria:
1. Applications where the purpose of travel (eg, courses) is to be included in the training part of the research program.
2. Conference participation with their own presentation (which should not be included in the training part of the research program).
3. Applicants who have not received grants from the scheme previously will be given priority over those who have received grants in previous years.

We also encourage PhD candidates to apply for travel funds from the Meltzer Fund, which has an application deadline of 1 December each year. See www.meltzerfondet.no for more information.

Scholarships for study-/research stays abroad

The Faculty of Psychology normally sets aside funds for two grants (up to NOK 35 000, - per application) to cover additional costs of study/research stays abroad for PhD candidates.
This depends, however, of the annual budget allocation by the Faculty Board.
PhD candidates who are admitted to the Faculty's research training program and can document the progress of the project in relation to their goals, can apply for support within this provision.

One of the requirements for the award of grants is that the candidate is planning a longer research stay (minimum three months) at a recognized foreign research institution. The candidate should start planning for this as early as possible.
Applications for grants to study abroad must contain information about:
• purpose of the stay and the relevance of the stay to the doctoral project
• names of contacts at the foreign institution, etc.
• courses that are planned
• overview of how the supervision will be carried out during the stay abroad
• budget for the stay

Recommendation from supervisor (must be enclosed) and approved progress report (need not be attached) is a prerequisite for the award of scholarships.
Applicants who have not received grants from the scheme previously will be given priority over those who have received grants in previous years.

If there are not sufficient applicants, the allocated funds may be used as research funds (see above)
