Methods for Numerical Modelling of Snowdrift
Two basic modelling concepts are investigated at the Cold Climate Research Centre in Narvik:
Some basic requirements for numerical snowdrift modelling
- Basis code/algorithm must be verified
- Snow transport calculations for transport by saltation/creep and suspension
- Evaluation of settling, deposition and erosion on snow surface
- Proper modelling of snow transport density with height
- Modelling of a snow surface that continuous changes with erosion and deposition, since the surface itself will influence the further development in the snowdrift process
- Verification of snow drift model

Left: Comparison between field measurement of snow mass concentration and simulated snow particles over the snow surface (Sundsbø&Hansen, 1997).

Left: Numerical simulation of the development in horizontal snow transport rate from a zero drift boundary to saturated conditions are reached (Sundsbø&Bang, 1998).
