Evolutionary Fisheries Ecology

Evolutionary Fisheries Ecology is a new research group that brings the evolutionary dimension strongly to the thinking about fisheries and fisheries science.

EvoFish has come to existence through the Recruitment Programme of the Bergen Research Foundation, which in February 2007 announced that the new research group EvoFish, with Mikko Heino as its leader, was among the projects to be funded. Through joint funding with the Department of Biology, we are receiving 4 million NOK annually for four years to run the research group in Evolutionary Fisheries Ecology.

EvoFish formally launched its activities in November 1st, 2007. In addition to the funding from the Bergen Research Foundation and Department of Biology, we also have projects funded through the Norwegian Research Council and the European Commission (see 'Projects' on the right). Many of us are also affiliated with the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, and with the Evolution and Ecology Programme at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. EvoFish members are now located together at the Department of Biology at the High Technology Centre in Thormøhlensgate 55, Bergen.

EvoFish will soon be looking for two PhD students and a postdoctoral researcher that are motivated to work with evolutionary experiments on fish, modelling, or statistical analysis of fisheries data. Please come back for announcements, or email us so that we can contact you.

These pages are under construction. Please email a person in the list on the right if you cannot find the information you are looking for.

    Evolution and Marine Protected Areas

EvoFish postdoc Erin S. Dunlop will give a presentation at the European Symposium on Marine Protected Areas in Murcia, Spain, 25-28 September. The presentation will focus on research examining the propensity of marine protected areas to reduce the amount of fisheries-induced evolution in species with separate spawning and feeding grounds.

    A FinE Kick-Off in Bergen

The European Research Network FinE on fisheries-induced evolution launches its activities with a kick-off meeting 24-28 September, hosted and organized by Mikko Heino. Almost 40 researchers, working with statistics, molecular biology, theoretical modeling and experiments, will gather for intensive research planning.
