Strømbrudd / Power outage
Grunnet strømbrudd i kveld, er mange av instituttets servertjenester ustabile eller utilgjengelige. Vi tar sikte på å få gjort endelige utbedringer i morgen (tirsdag). Inntil da beklager vi at blant andre følgende tjenester er utilgjengelige:
* Faggruppenes delte områder på klientmaskinene (/Data/ii/*data)
* /Data/ii/public_html (for hjemmesideområder på www.ii.uib.no)
* nocat-nettverket for trådløs
* Alle servere satt opp for prosjekter og spesielle behov
Tjenester som er tilgjengelige, men som kan få korte avbrudd i forbindelse med utbedringer, inkluderer:
* login.ii.uib.no
* db.ii.uib.no
* www.ii.uib.no
* infrastrukturelle nettverkstjenester (DNS, DHCP, LDAP)
Kontormaskiner er ikke rammet.
Oppdatering 25.09.07 10:30: Alle tjenester er nå tilgjengelige igjen.

ENGLISH SUMMARY:
Due to a power outage tonight, many of the department's network services are unavailable. Office computers are not affected, aside from some shared storage directories mounted on them. We aim to fix the problems during tomorrow.
Update 25.09.07 10:30: All services are back online.

Evolution Unsupported
Email problems
Evolution has caused some problems after moving the home directory. If you have problems, in particular if you used a local folder before you moved. (Most users had their email folders at the IT department I believe.) Try the following:
- exit evolution (it has probably created an empty .evolution folder)
- move away any evolution or .evolution folder in the root of your home directory at the IT department.
- in your home directory at the IT department, mv the informatikk.%user/.evolution (ie. the .evolution folder from your home directory at Informatics) up one level into the root of your home directory at the IT department. %user=your user name the IT department.
- start evolution again
- if this worked, you can delete the folders you moved in the 2nd step above, else:
Get in touch with http://brita.uib.no/ if this did not work. The IT deaprtment has little expertise in Evolution, so they very likely will move you to Thunderbird as email reader. I recommed you accept this.
Users of other email software most likely have their mail folders at the IT department already. If not, procedure is basically the same as above, but the paths are different.

Migration of users and machines to the IT department
Problems observed so far
The migration of all users to the IT department is well under way. Some problems have been observed in the process. Here is some information that may help you after your machine and account have been migrated.
1. Account
Some users - particular Ph.D students who formerly have been students at UiB - have 2 accounts. In some cases there has been confusion about which account they have exepected to use. If you think this may the case for you, get in touch with me or Christian and we will check it up.
2. Password
Some users have had problems with their password. This is Linux-related problem. Typically you can fix this yourself by going to the site http://sebra.uib.no/ and login with your IT account. Update your passwd and check that you update it for all operating systems. If you need assistance contact me or Christian.
3. Home directory problems
Your home directory at Informatics have been copied to the IT department. You should find it in a sub-directory of your home directory at the IT department. The sub-directory is called: informatikk.your_ita_username. Problems noted here has been:
- wrong user name (see 1 above)
- problems with permissions (I am not table to check this, since I do not have access to your home directories at the IT department).
The best thing to do here is to make a case at http://brita.uib.no/ or call them.
Note also that you now have two different home directories: One at the IT department which is now your main work account. The other at Informatics, which you use when logging in to reources locally at the department (like login.ii.uib.no, web services etc.) If you want to keep these account synchronised, you may use rsync.
4. Software
The IT deparment does a two-stage install, where most of the software is installed during the second phase. This means that at worst it will take 24 hours from initial install to final install is finished.
If you lack software after 1 day or specific software does not work as it used to do at Informatics, you must open a case at http://brita.uib.no/
5. Problems with mail
This has - as far as I know - only affected users who use evolution as their mail reader. This is most likely a permissions problem (see 3 above). The IT department is looking into this, but you should make a case at http://brita.uib.no/ if you have this problem.
6. Updating web pages
Some users have had problems updating web pages. The problems are represented by two different scenarios:
- /net/public_html
This is now available via NFS mounts to the client machines at the IT department. Note however that the mount point is different:
/Data/ii/public_html
- /net/www
This is not at the moment exported to the IT department. We may do so if needed, however I am unsure how these files typically are accessed. In particular, the IT department has very little support for Unix/linux group rights. So for the short term I have decided that files in /net/www hierarchy will only be available for updates from login.ii.uib.no.
Please report problems with this policy to trouble@ii.uib.no.
7. Printing
The default printer at the IT department is 'pullprint', which requires you to use your employee card to print.
However, you may also continue to access the print queues at Informatics, though they may be a little bit harder to find. They have names like ii_lp12 etc. Not all print queues are available. We will look into this and get it fixed as soon as possible.
8. Access resources from home or outside UiB
- you can still login to login.ii.uib.no using your informatics account.
- the IT department has several different services that you may use:
-- login.uib.no is the linux login server
-- hjemmekontor.uib.no is the windows login server
For problems using these two services report them to http://brita.uib.no/
For problems with login.ii.uib.no or other local services at Informatics, report them to trouble@ii.uib.no.

Flytting av strømforsyning 1. etg
ITA skal inn med nytt rack
Server works Saturday June 30th 16:00
We have to move some power supplies for one of the server racks on the 1st floor. This may cause the loss of network connections to some of the major servers and file systems. The loss should be of short duration we hope.
Server works finished Sunday Jule 1st 1500
We ran into problems with the GPFS filesystem. It went down hard when it lost connection to network (heartbeat). We should look into the possibility of giving it it's own network.
Printer-problem
Defekt hardware etter firmware-oppgradering
HP printer problems
A firmware upgrade has caused two of the HP printers (on the 4th and 5th floor) to develop hardware problems. NDS/HP is trying to fix it, but it is taking some time to get the necessary parts.
In the meantime use oce1 (4th floor) or lp8 (3rd floor).
Overføring Klientdrift ansatte
ITA klientdrift
Litt seint kanskje, men jeg kom på at vi burde notere at ogverføring til ITA klientdrift er i full gang. Men ferdig til 1. juli blir den ikke.

CentOS 4.5
CentOS-maskiner driftet av Institutt for informatikk og BCCS vil natt til lørdag 19. mai bli oppgradert til den nye CentOS 4.5. De fleste brukere vil ikke merke mye til dette, men enkelte kan oppleve at noen applikasjoner begynner å oppføre seg litt uventet. I slike tilfeller anbefales man å gjøre en omstart på maskinen. Problemer som mot forventning ikke løses av dette, kan rettes til trouble@ii.uib.no.

Maple og Matlab: Nye versjoner
Hei,
har installert Maple11 og Matlab 2007a på kastanje. Har testet x86_64 og x86 support. Alt rulles ut i natt.
Gamle versjoner er fortsatt tilgjengelig, med to unntak. Gamle versjoner kalles med versjonsnavn fra /local/bin. F.eks. 'maple10', 'matlab7sp3' osv.
Unntakene er: matlab241, matlab2419 er slettet i /local/bin. Kan gjennopprettes dersom det er behov.

Endring i drift av mastergradsanlegget
Som et ledd i prosessen med å sentralisere IT-drift ved Universitetet i Bergen, er nå driften av Institutt for informatikk sitt dataanlegg for mastergradsstudenter overført fra instituttet til IT-avdelingen. Det innebærer at man på disse maskinene, som er fordelt på rom i første og tredje etasje på Høyteknologisenteret, nå skal logge seg inn med studentkonto fra IT-avdelingen. Problemer med disse maskinene skal meldes til BRITA på http://bs.uib.no eller telefon 55584700. De gamle masterkontoene fra informatikk, inkludert hjemmesideområder, er fremdeles tilgjengelige ved SSH-innlogging til login.ii.uib.no.
