Three young UiB researchers have succeeded in obtaining support from the Young and Outstanding Researchers (YFF) scheme. One of them, Jan Martin Nordbotten, is the youngest person ever to receive support from the scheme.

By Lars Holger Ursin

Nordbotten is 25 years old and is senior scientific officer at the Department of Mathematics.  He presented his doctoral thesis at UiB in 2004, and is the youngest person ever to have obtained a doctor’s degree at a Norwegian university.  He has now also become the youngest person to receive support from the YFF scheme, for the project Modelling Transport in Porous Media over Multiple Scales.

Ildar Garipzanov of the Centre for Medieval Studies has also succeeded in obtaining support for the project, The “Forging” of Christian Identity in the Northern Periphery (c.820-c. 1200)

Boris Lenhard of The Sars Centre and the Unifob Centre for Computational Science has also received YFF funding for the project, Transcriptome regulation in development, disease and cancer.

None of UiB’s female researchers received funding this time around, but the Research Council informs that 8 of the 20, who received support, are women.

179 applications were received for the pot of 175 million Norwegian crowns, which will be shared out over the next four years.  This is the second time that the scheme has allotted economic funding.  26 researchers received support in 2003 and three of them were from UiB.
