The cost of the machine is a secret, but the Research Council of Norway, Unifob and the Institute of Marine Research will help foot the bill.  The Centre for Computational Science is at present making room for the ten metre long machine.

Cray XT4 has a maximum capacity of more than 50 teraflops.  This means that it can carry-out 50.000.000.000.000 calculations per second.

- Mathematic modelling is becoming more and more important within various fields of research - such as biology, climate modelling, chemistry and physics, marine and geological sciences.  The machine will mean a great deal to many people, creating greater interaction between experts in computational science and it will greatly aid research, says Hans-Petter Sejrup, who is dean of The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Researchers at all of the universities in Norway, and also research institutions and industry will be able to make use of the machines capabilities.  The new super machine will be used in EU projects and contribute to international research projects.
