– It is decisive that the students tell us what it’s like to be a UiB-student. Only in this way can we continuously work on improving our education, says professor Berit Rokne Hanestad, UiB’s vice-rector for education.

NOKUT, The Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education, is just about to evaluate UiB’s systems for the quality assurance of education. Some 200 students and employees are chosen to meet with representatives from NOKUT.

Although most students at UiB won’t get in touch with NOKUT, Rokne Hanestad underlines the importance of letting one’s voice be heard.

Altering the course
– We are concerned with continuously improving our education. Including recruitment: how are we going to attract the very best candidates? And the reception of our students: how can it be made even better? And how may our study programmes become even better? In addition there are important issues like the standards of the reading halls, accessibility on web, and social factors. Our students play a decisive role in the efforts to improve the quality at UiB.

– How may the students let their voices be heard, more specifically?

– I hope they will agree on answering different kinds of evaluation forms if asked to do so. The point of this wide range of evaluation is to figure out what the students think in order to alter our course and make improvements, Rokne Hanestad emphasises.

Follow up
– Will the student’s contribution be followed up?

– Absolutely, and NOKUT actually serves as a watchdog in this respect, says Rokne Hanestad, who underscores that the contributions from the students may come in various ways.

– If you wish to address some problem, the course coordinator would be a natural place to start. The next step would be the programme coordinator, or even the department management. Another option is to contact the Norwegian Student’s Union (NSU). More serious issues is bound to be followed up practically no matter who you choose to approach first, assures Berit Rokne Hanestad.
