"George Johannesen was one of Norways most important thinkers. Bergen University should be proud that his professorship in rhetoric was based in Bergen. Calling the area behind the Student Centre - Georg Johannesen Place - would be a suitable way of showing how proud we are," say Trygve Svensson and Kristoffer Jul-Larsen. They handed the petition to the University Director on Wednesday.
Preoccupied with useful ideas
Students who are studying for there MA in literature think that the area behind the Student Centre will be a great meeting place for students.
"Johannsesen was preoccupied with useful ideas and verbal traditions: conversation, discussion, narrative. Naming a place after him, where people can meet and talk together, will be a suitable way to honour his memory."
"It is a very good idea and we will discuss the matter, said University Director," Kari Tove Elvebakken when she received the petition.
Georg Johannesen grew up in Nygård, and lived near the Student Centre for many years, on the corner of Fredrik Meltzers Street and Strømgaten , until his death. He died on Christmas Eve 2005, while swimming in Egypt. Johannesens legendary office was situated in Olaf Ryes Road. The actual place is therefore halfway between his house and office.
