What to do in Bergen?

Live music/concert halls

These are some of the places you should visit if you like live music:

Rock: Kvarteret, Hulen, Garage

Jazz: USF/Verftet: A media and concert centre run by the University of Bergen. Located in nice surroundings. This is also a very nice outdoor restaurant during the summer season. They actually offer you warm blankets on chilly summer nights! Address: Nøstegaten 72, phone: 55 58 69 00.

Classic: Grieghallen, the biggest concert hall in Bergen. All the bigger concerts in Bergen normally takes place in Grieghallen. The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra gives concerts every Thursday and normally every Friday, at 7.30 p.m. Student prices: 65 kroner. Recommended! You can buy your tickets at the post office, or by telephone. (Automatic telephone reservations in Norwegian.) Address: Edvard Griegs Plass 1, tel: 55 21 61 50.

Cinemas

No films in Norway are dubbed, neither on TV nor at the cinemas.

Konsertpalèet is a big cinema centre with 13 different cinemas. Its cinema halls vary in size from very small to rather big, therefore Konsertpalèet also offers a wide range of non-commercial films. The cinema is open every day from 10.30 a.m. to 11 p.m. You can choose between 25 different titles, but for the most popular ones you should order in advance. This can be done by phoning 55 23 23 15. You can also phone 820 30 400 (costs 3 NOK pr minute) for 24 hour automatic service, which, however, is offered in Norwegian. Using a cinema card is cheaper than buying single tickets. The card may be bought at the same time as you buy the ticket, but you have to say explicitly that you will use the card before the tickets are printed - if not you will be charged full price. For more information: http://www.filmweb.no/bergenkino/

Address: Neumannsgate 3  (close to the theatre)

Filmklubben is an alternative cinema where you can see "narrow" films, but also classics. A complete list of the forthcoming movies can be obtained at the cinema. Membership is required, and costs 70 kroner a semester. At Filmklubben it costs 30 kroner to watch a movie, and it is open Mondays and Thursdays. Address:          Parkveien 1, phone: 55 31 85 80.

At Cinemateket you can use the same membership card as at Filmklubben (It is run by the same people). It is open every day except on Mondays. They have a similar film profile as Filmklubben. The price is 35 kroner. Address: Kulturhuset USF, Georgernes Verft 3, phone: 55 31 85 80.

Theatre

The Theatre of Bergen, "Den Nationale Scene", dates back to 1876. The famous Norwegian author Henrik Ibsen was the manager of the theatre for many years. Unfortunately, all plays are in Norwegian. Special reductions in price are available for students. Address: Engen 1, phone: 55 90 17 90.

Restaurants

There are many types of restaurants in Bergen: Italian, Japanese, Indian, Mongolian, Mexican, Chinese etc. And of course we have some typical Norwegian restaurants as well. Price and quality vary, from expensive gourmet restaurants to cheap fast food restaurants. Among the restaurants with the more student-friendly prices we will mention a few.

Cafè Opera offers various light meals, but also dinner at reasonable prices.

Bryggestuen & Bryggeloftet is situated at Bryggen, and offers the dish of the day at a reasonable price. Address: Bryggen 11, phone: 55 31 06 30.

When your parents come to visit you, safe bets are the seafood restaurant Enhjørningen, Bryggen, phone: 55 32 79 19, and Munkestuen Cafè, Klostergaten 12, phone: 55 90 21 49 which is small, intimate and extremely popular. The meat restaurant De Tre Musketerer, Vaskerelven 16/18 (not far from Dickens), phone: 55 23 42 33 is also worth a visit.

Churches/Religious Activities

Norway has a Lutheran state church, and therefore most churches are Protestant. But also other churches are represented in Bergen.

The Roman Catholic Church
St. Paul's Church, Christiesgt. 16, phone: 55 32 54 10

The Methodist Church
Vetrelidsalmenningen 8, phone: 55 31 65 80

The nearest Lutheran church is the "Biskopshavn Kirke", which is located not far from the Merino building. You should also visit the "Johanneskirken" at the university area. Address: Sydnesplassen

"Navigatørene" at NHH is a religious student group. Once a week they gather to worship, talk, etc. In addition they arrange a lot of social activities.

Mountain hiking
The mountains surrounding Bergen offer a wide range of hiking trails in a mountainous and wooded landscape. Do not leave Bergen without having hiked from Mount Ulriken to Mount Fløyen! Further information about routes can be obtained by contacting Bergen Turlag, an organisation which also arranges weekend and Sunday tours with a guide. They also sell maps for walkers/hikers. Address: Tverrgaten 4/6, phone: 55 32 22 30.

Golf
For the time being there is only one golf course in Bergen (nine holes). Greens fee: NOK 150. You have to be a member of a golf-club (bring documentation) or accompany a member of Bergen Golf-club in order to play. NHHI also has its own golf group. Ask the Sports Committee for more information. Address: Åstveit, 5106 Øvre Ervik, phone: 55 18 20 77.

Ski resorts
There are a few ski resorts around Bergen. The best one is at Voss, approximately one hour and a half from Bergen by car or train. It is possible to rent ski and snowboard equipment.
Prices (approx.)

Bicycling
In Bergen there are a lot of hills, so you will need a bicycle with a gear system. Once a year, normally in April/may, the police in Bergen will arrange an auction, where they will sell bicycles from the lost property office. A good place to make a bargain! During summer you can hire bicycles at Vågsalmenningen or at the Motor Caravan camping in Sandviken. The rest of the year you can hire bicycles at Sykkelbutikken. Address: Sykkelbutikken, Østre Skostredet 5, phone: 55 32 06 20.
