Contaminant induced biological effects in ringed seal

Halogenated persistent organic contaminants accumulate mostly in lipids of animals. In seals most of these compounds are stored in blubber where they are relatively harmless. However, during negative energy balance lipids are mobilized, and accumulated contaminants become rapidly bio-available.

In a number of species lipid mobilization is associated with increased contaminant concentrations in blood possible resulting in contaminant-induced biological effects. Contaminant release from storage tissues to blood leads to a secondary exposure, that may lead to lasting impacts on the animal’s health and physiology.

This project will deliver knowledge about changes in tissue concentrations and tissue distribution of contaminants in different stages of fasting.
